Inside the Damascus Gate
The Damascus Gate is known as the threshold of Jerusalem. The Wailing
Wall leads through the Damascus Gate and the Arab quarter. Descending the
Mount of Olives, one can reach the gate in half an hour. The Gate is the
place of markets, outside and within the Old City. Inside the city's narrow
streets and choked alleys the only transport is that of donkeys and hand-
wheeled carts. The rest is a river of people. The shops are booths, open to
the street in the oriental way. Wares seem to strew from every booth.
